Takashi Sakamoto,
Founder & former CEO of BOOKOFF Corp, President of NEW VALUE Corp.

In 1991, Sakamoto-san left his career in selling used pianos to establish BOOKOFF Corporation Limited., which has grown into Japan's largest used bookstore with over 1000 locations. Like most great business ideas, Sakamoto-san's idea for BOOKOFF was extremely simple; sell used books in a clean, organized, well-lit environment with well-trained and friendly employees. The revenue model was equally simple but highly profitable; buy used books at 10% of the list price and sell them for 50% of the list price and if for some reason the book does not sell for 3 months the book is sold for 100 yen.

With over 60 billion yen in annual sales, 4000+ staff, and over 1000 BOOKOFF locations in Japan and abroad that simple model seems to have worked very well. BOOKOFF also diversified into several sub-brands such as used sporting goods (B-Sports), used clothing (G-Mode), used electronics (HARDOFF) and Tsutaya franchises.

Since retiring from BOOKOFF in 2007, Sakamoto-san has been spending his time applying the lessons learned in the used book business to the food business. Through his new company NEW VALUE Corp. he has already established an okonomiyaki concept restaurant and seven izakaya "Karaton" concept restaurants.

ニューバリュー株式会社 代表取締役）

坂本氏は、中古ピアノ販売などいくつかのの自営業を経て、1990年に古本店で有名なブックオフを設立しました。現在その店舗数は1000店を超える日本で最も大きな古本へと成長しました。今までの古本ビジネスは、本によって価値を決める古物商的な発想であったが、坂本氏は古本の概念を大きく転換させ、非常にシンプルなアイデアにしました。古本をきれいにし、素晴らしくトレーニングされたフレンドリーなスタッフの元で明るい店舗作りを徹底させました。収益モデルもシンプルで、本の定価の10%で買い取りをし、半額で販売し3ヶ月間在庫として残った場合には、100円で販売するといった販売モデルを展開しています。

年間売り上げは600億円を超え、パートタイムも含めると4000名以上のスタッフを抱え、国内海外合わせて1000店舗展開をしています。また事業領域も多岐にわたり、たとえば、スポーツ販売のBスポーツ、古着販売のGモード、中古電化製品販売のハードオフ、TSUTAYAフランチャイズなどがあります。

2007年にブックオフを退職したのち、坂本氏は今までの古本ビジネスのキャリアを生かし、ニューバリュー株式会社を設立し、フードビジネスに時間を割いています。現在は、お好み焼き屋と居酒屋「唐とん」7店舗などを既に設立しています。
